Progress has been made in leaps and bounds at the Gemmell’s site as part of Te Wairoa E Whanake – Rise Up and Grow Wairoa project.
The once dark and derelict, burnt-out building full of growing weeds, is now an open-air space ready to be transformed.
The revitalisation of this space will take place through the development of an all-weather community courtyard for locals and visitors to enjoy all year round.
It will house a mixture of retail and hospitality businesses as well as a welcoming space to sit, relax and spend time with family and friends.
The concrete structure has undergone repairs and strengthening processes and the ground is currently being prepared for the installation of ground beams and earthquake strengthening steel portals.
Next door in the former Winter’s building, ideas are forming for its long-awaited development.
Linings have been removed and some walls have been knocked down to begin the stage of earthquake strengthening design and internal layout concepts.
Meanwhile, the POD project is nearing completion with the external shell fully constructed and ready to be put in place at the Gemmell’s site.
Once in place, the interior fit-out of the POD will take place including the installation of cooking appliances and joinery.
Wairoa’s young workforce and local EIT construction course graduates have been involved in several aspects of the project so far, including the POD project and removing the interior linings from the Winter’s building.
